Shipyard co-founder and original master brewer, Alan Pugsley, sat down with Todd Officer of Beer Business Radio to chat about beer, business and everything in between.
Here's a sneak peak at Todd's interview with Alan:
Worst Business Moment:
It’s the mid 90’s, you ink a partnership deal with Miller Brewing Company only to watch your barrel production drop from 40,000bbls to 25,000bbls over the course of the next twelve months…….talk about depressing!
We are excited to be teaming up with Berkshire Mountain Distillers on their newest endeavor, the Craft Brewers Whiskey Project! BMD will be distilling a multitude of different beers from a select group of craft brewers, including Shipyard’s Export Ale. The resulting whiskey, bound to be momentous, will then be aged at the distillery for an undetermined amount of time before it is released. The whiskey from the Craft Brewers Whiskey Project will be available in several states.
Let’s hop to it! It’s impossible to discuss craft beer without paying homage to the hop. Although that was not the case just a short time ago when our only choices were those light or even lighter lagers (you know the ones) made by multi-national, mega-brewers (you know the ones). By and large, those beers dismiss the potential of the hop. The craft beer revolution has rectified that.
No one celebrates the virtues of the hop more than American craft brewers and no style of beer celebrates the hop more than IPAs. So let the celebrations commence!
Welcome to the dark side! This winter, Darth Vader has nothing on us at Shipyard. We plan to lure you to the dark side with a diabolical assortment of devilishly dark malty beers available in our new 12 pack seasonal collection. The starring roles to be played by 3 bottles each of our winter seasonal, Prelude Special Ale, Longfellow Winter Ale, Signature Series Imperial Stout and new to the dark side - Shipyard Milk Chocolate Stout.
These styles of beer are perfect for combat with the cold, brooding weather that lies in wait. Leave it to these dark beauties to warm the depths of your soul with dark roasted, chocolate and coffee overtones and an alcoholic warming akin to a slowly radiating glow.

If you were in Portland, Maine during Portland Beer Week last year you may have stumbled across a variety of Bill Murray themed beers, including Shipyard Little Horror of Hops. Due to demand for this beer after Portland Beer Week, we decided to launch this Rye IPA as our new fall seasonal. The name pay homage to Bill Murray's Little Shop of Horrors, while stearing clear of the Hollywood trademark police, and the ghoulish label was created by artist and shipyard tour host Hannah Godbey.
This beer is now available in select markets through the fall.
Shipyard Little Horror of Hops is a hoppy Rye IPA, balanced by a complex malt blend. Peppery spice notes and a robust citrus hop flavor complement the dry hop finish and make for a perfect alternative to our Pumpkinhead ale.

New Limited Release Tequila Barrel Aged Summer Ale
Thursday, June 4, 2015
The Shipyard Brew Crew is at it again. The idea of Shipyard Estival was born on a late winter day in Maine when the Brew Crew was longing for summer and had just begun their first batch of this year’s Shipyard Summer Ale. The brewers decided to fill several French oak tequila barrels with this first brew of Summer Ale and after two months of aging, the result was Estival.
This limited release brew is an ode to summer in Maine and pairs well with sunshine, beaches and yard games. This beer is best enjoyed on a patio with a lime wedge. It will be available in Maine only, on draft and in 12 oz bottles, at select retailers and at the Shipyard Brewery Store on Newbury Street in Portland.
Shipyard Brewing Company wishes Chamberlain Pale Ale a very happy 20th birthday. Chamberlain Pale Ale is a seasoned member of the Shipyard lineup and was first brewed in 1995 by master brewer, Alan Pugsley.
Chamberlain Pale Ale is dry and crisp up front with an aromatic hoppy finish featuring Fuggles, Cascade and Tettnang Hops. This classic English style ale is available year-round, and is named after renowned Civil War hero Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. Chamberlain Pale Ale is best paired with seafood, and is especially tasty when enjoyed with a hearty fillet of salmon.
The smooth, drinkable, cooper ale is best served cold on a warm day during the spring and summer months. Chamberlain Pale Ale is available on draft and in 6-and 12-packs at select retailers.
In honor of the unique seafaring heritage off the coast of Florida, Shipyard Brewing Company is partnering with Mel Fisher's Treasures to celebrate the 30th Anniversary of the Atocha Mother Lode find.
Mel Fisher's Treasures is a historic shipwreck recovery effort based in Key West, Florida that organizes a multi-day celebration every summer in honor of Key West's renowned treasure hunter, Mel Fisher. The Mel Fisher Days festivities were created in an effort to give back to the island that Fisher called home and which supported him during his 16-year search for the Mother Lode.
Shipyard Brewing Company’s nautical ties and traditions and its similar commitment to give back to the communities that support it, made involvement in the Mel Fisher Days a natural fit.
