We are psyched to be a part of John Connelly’s latest adventure, an Expedition to Inspire Outdoor Desire. Check out the details below and show your support any way you can. Cheer him on, donate to his adventure, or join the Launch Party at Sea Dog in South Portland on April 5th.
PaddleQuest 1500, an “expedition to inspire outdoor desire,” will launch on April 16, 2016 from the Fulton Chain Lakes in Old Forge, New York. The 1500-mile solo river/sea odyssey will be made by John Connelly, president and CEO of Adventurous Joe Coffee. Connelly is also a former leader of L.L. Bean’s Outdoor Discovery Schools, a former member of the US Canoe & Kayak team, and an accomplished waterway pioneer credited with numerous whitewater first-descents.
Connelly’s 75-day trip will take him through 2 countries, 4 states, 22 streams, and 58 lakes. The journey will be the first to link four major waterways: The Northern Forest Canoe Trail, Saint John River, Bay of Fundy, and Maine Island Trail. The projected end date for the venture in Kittery, Maine, is 75 days after the April 16 launch. Connelly will be providing regular video and text updates on his trip at paddlequest1500.com.
The trip was inspired by Connelly’s recognition of a growing body of evidence that confirms the physical and mental health benefits that come from communing with nature at a time when EPA reports suggest that Americans spend 93% of their lives indoors. Connelly has expressed his hope that his trip can inspire others to increase the time they spend outside, citing research that suggests the profound sense of personal stewardship for natural resources that such contact inspires.
“I’m making this trip for anyone who’s ever stared into the night sky and yearned for a deeper connection to the world beyond ourselves,” says Connelly. “The planetary powers that are so evident in nature are the birthright of us all. I’m honored to participate in a venture that seeks to celebrate them with others who might be motivated to enjoy and protect them as well.”
Connelly has lined up an impressive list of corporate and media sponsors for the trek. The former includes Cascade Designs, Garmin, GrandyOats, Hyperlite Mountain Gear, NRS, Shipyard Brewing Company, Stellar Kayaks, Wenonah Canoes, and Werner Paddles, among others.
The public is invited to a launch party for Connelly’s trip, to be held at the Sea Dog Brewing Company in South Portland on April 5th at 6:00 p.m. Anyone interested in becoming a personal or corporate sponsor for the trip is encouraged to contact Connelly directly for more information about sponsorship opportunities.
